It takes an afternoon to learn katakana (yes that’s all!!), you just have to set the time aside and just plough your way through the 46 symbols. If you don’t get everything the first day, try it again, just set aside a good 3 or 4 hours and you’ll have it cracked.

Here is a great listing of free learning resources for the learners of the Japanese language. All are freely available on the web. Learn Hiragana & Katakana at your own pace, test yourself with quizzes, and vocab tests. Includes speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar, reading practice, as well as newspapers, magazines, and bulletin / chat boards.
- Another resource is the Learn-Japanese website, which gives a brief introduction to Japanese writing, vocabulary, speaking, writing, and grammar lessons.
