I am surprised to see that Malay is on the list at 12th.
Given the population of Malaysia is no more than 30 million and that even if one includes expatriates speak Malay, I highly doubt that there are 50 million Malay speakers.

Even if there are, then what about Indonesian speakers? Surely there are more Bahasa Indonesia speakers than there are Bahasa Melayu speakers.

Unless, Indonesian and Malay has been conflated here.

But even that doesn’t explain the number either. Close to 250 million people live in Indonesia.

And of course, Indonesian and Malay are regarded as different.
Just ask any Malay speaker to translate for Indonesian. They’ll be nonplussed.
Not only are the differences in speech astonishing, but day by day, the usage of words are evolving to something undecipherable to Malay speakers.

So, perhaps the statistics are a bit “off” in this case.
