New foreign language movies (October 2010)

Over the past month, documentaries and movies in various languages have been recorded from SBS & ABC channels.

These programmes are available in the Self Study room (Rm 222, Brennan MacCallum building) should you wish to view them.

Nina’s Home

Inspired by actual events. The story of Nina, a resilient woman who struggles to integrate 25 children, liberated from the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps, among the other orphans under her care during the final months of the holocaust.

Nureyev: From Russia with Love

Tells the story of Nureyev’s life in Russia up to and including his defection to the West. Extensive home movies and previously unseen archives from Nureyev’s childhood and adolescence in Russia, including his early triumphs on stage in Leningrad, are moving examples of an immense talent in its early stages of development. Friends, lovers and fellow dancers all have vivid memories of their experiences with him; not all are complimentary.

Harlan: Hitler’s Other Filmmaker

Veit Harlan was, along with Leni Riefenstahl, Nazi Germany’s most successful film director, remembered today for his infamous Jew Suss. Harlan was a master of national kitsch, exulting in melodrama and death, but he was also an extraordinary artist who ended up serving the Nazi propaganda machine. This documentary film, the first account of his life and career, draws on his extensive film catalogue, including previously unreleased materials from the Harlan family’s private archive.
