New foreign language movies (May 2011)

Over the past month, documentaries and movies in various languages have been recorded from SBS & ABC channels.

These programmes are available in the Self Study room (Rm 222, Brennan MacCallum building) should you wish to view them.

Chinese

Red Sorghum
Director Zhang Yimou brings his inimitable touch to Red Sorghum, a sumptuous drama set during 1930s China, just prior to the Japanese occupation. Jiu’er is a young bride arranged to marry the ageing, leprous owner of a sorghum winery. But the old man dies, and Jiu’er takes over the winery, along with her lover. Their rural lives are filled with struggle and even joy, but the invasion of the Japanese brings tragedy and blood to their doorsteps. Winner of Berlin’s Golden Bear Award 1988.
